Three take Finalist and Semi-Finalist Honors in International Writing Competition

Three Central New York Pen Women earned honors in the 2017 William Faulkner/William Wisdom Creative Writing, international competition. Karen Hempson's manuscript The Bean Pickers: A Portrait of my Italian-American Immigrant Family was a finalist in the Non-fiction book category; Nancy Dafoe's essay "Journalists as Map Makers" was a finalist in the Essay category, and Dafoe's manuscript Both End in Speculation was a finalist in the Novel-in-progress category. CNY Branch member Rachael Ikins will be reading with three other Clare Songbirds' poets at Funk 'n Waffles in Syracuse on Saturday, October 21 from 2-5 p.m. Come and join Rachael and the other poets.

Rachael Ikins full-length poetry book published

Branch member Rachael Ikins recently published her first full-length poetry book, Just Two Girls, through Clare Songbirds Publishing. The collection includes 80 poems in various forms, many of which have previously appeared in journals and literary magazines.

Branch President Mary L. Gardner publishes article in The Pen Woman

CNY Branch President Mary L. Gardner has an article published in the Fall 2017 issue of The Pen Woman magazine. Gardner's article chronicles the Central New York Branch connection to an historic photo hanging in the Pen Arts Building in Washington, D.C. The photo dates April 18, 1928 and offers a group portrait featuring President Calvin Coolidge standing with a few hundred NLAPW members who had come to visit the nation's Capital. The only child in the photo was the daughter of a CNY Branch member in attendance at that time. Gardner's researched article provides the background and historical context of the photo and the 4-year-old Dorothy Wakker in the 1928 photograph.

Branch members Georgia Popoff and Nancy Dafoe Named as CNY Book Award Finalists

The CNY Book Awards announced finalists today, and two CNY Branch members were named in the finalist list. Georgia Popoff's The Whiskey of our Discontent is a finalist in the non-fiction category of awards. Nancy Dafoe's Poets Diving in the Night is a finalist in the poetry category. Winners will be announced at the CNY Philanthropy Center on E. Fayette Street in Syracuse, NY on the evening of November 9, 2017. Tickets to the event are still available through the Downtown Writers Center in Syracuse.
